Ants at a sugar bowl, a spill of juice, a sticky ring under a syrup jar, or the rim of a soft drink can are sugar-feeding. Ants at pet food, grease behind a cooker, a dropped piece of meat, or an insect carcass are protein-feeding.
Sugar-feeders carry nothing visible — they're transporting liquid internally. Protein-feeders carry solid fragments, visibly, and it's obvious once you look.
If there's an accessible sugar source they're walking past, they're not on sugars. That's a stronger signal than what they're taking.
Broad pattern: colonies emerging from winter and building population need carbohydrate for worker energy. Colonies actively rearing brood need protein and fat for larval development. Colonies preparing for winter shift back toward carbohydrate for storage. The shifts aren't rigid and they vary by species, which is exactly why observation beats assumption.
What we do with it: where preference is clear, the matching bait goes down. Where it isn't, both go down side by side and the ants decide — and their choice tells us more in an hour than a description does.
And it's why bait placements get reviewed rather than set and forgotten. A colony that switches preference mid-programme will abandon a placement that was working perfectly a fortnight earlier, and the answer is to switch with them rather than conclude the bait failed.
Before anything else, because it's the most common intervention and it works against you.
It's a foraging route, and the ants on it are replaceable non-reproductive workers — a small fraction of the total. Killing them changes nothing about the colony's capacity.
The colony reroutes, frequently somewhere less convenient — inside a wall rather than along a baseboard where you could see it.
Pharaoh ants most notoriously, and several others behaviourally, respond to chemical stress by splitting and dispersing queens and brood to new locations. This is the specific mechanism behind "it got worse after I sprayed."
Bait works because the trail survives. Slow-acting material carried home and shared by mouth-to-mouth feeding among workers, brood, and queens. That reaches the reproductive core, and it only happens if the ants keep walking and keep wanting what's on offer.
Once bait is placed, leave the trail alone. Don't wipe it, don't spray near it, don't tidy up. More ants around a placement in the first day or two is the treatment working.
One thing you can safely do beforehand: wipe the trail with soapy water rather than spraying. That removes the pheromone without leaving a repellent barrier that would interfere with bait later.
And tell us what you've already applied. Residual repellent near a placement makes ants avoid it — a second reason a bait gets ignored that has nothing to do with the menu.
Preference tells you the bait. Species tells you how the colony is structured, and that decides the approach.
Small and dark, trailing to sweets and moisture; crush one and it smells of rotten coconut or blue cheese. Large colonies with multiple queens and a readiness to establish satellite nests — so partial treatment scatters them and bait-led work is essential. Preference shifts noticeably through the season.
Small, dark, nesting under paving, driveways, and slab edges, entering at expansion joints. Nest usually just outside, which makes direct nest treatment and perimeter work effective — frequently the cheapest and lowest-volume route available.
Large, black or black and red. They don't eat wood — they excavate it to nest, preferring timber softened by moisture, and they forage for the same sugars and proteins as everything else. Signs: coarse shavings with insect fragments beneath a hole, faint rustling in a wall at night, and large ants indoors in winter, which means a nest inside the structure.
Very small, pale yellow to light brown, multiple queens, indoor nesting, and the strongest budding response of any species. Bait-only is the correct protocol, and preference matching matters more here than anywhere because there's no fallback method.

Follow the trail to the wall and mark where it disappears. Then ask which wall it is.
An exterior wall, at floor level, at a threshold, or at a window frame usually means an outdoor colony. Check outside along the same wall — if the trail continues, you've confirmed it and found your entry point in one step.
An interior partition, a ceiling edge, or a plumbing chase means the nest is inside your structure. There's nothing beyond that wall except more house.
Outdoor colonies need bait at the entry, direct nest treatment where the nest is located, sealing of the entry point, and grounds correction — mulch pulled back from the foundation, firewood off the ground, vegetation cut off the structure.
Indoor colonies need the nest locating, bait carried into the void by the ants themselves, void dusting where the cavity can be reached, and moisture correction, without which the vacancy simply gets refilled.
Carpenter ants in particular are a moisture story — a nest inside a structure sits in timber that's damp for a reason. Roof or gutter leaks, failed flashing, leaking window frames, plumbing leaks in walls, crawlspace condensation, or a chronically wet sill plate. And they frequently maintain a parent nest outdoors in a stump, dead tree, or woodpile with satellites inside, so exterior inspection is part of the job.

Water. Leaking traps and taps, condensation on pipes, damp under sinks, plant saucers, and pet water bowls. Ants indoors during a dry spell are there for water rather than food, and a single weeping trap sustains a colony indefinitely.
Access. Vegetation, mulch, and soil touching the structure; branches contacting the roof; firewood against siding; gaps at utility penetrations, weep holes, thresholds, and window frames.
And for indoor colonies specifically: the moisture in the void. Fix the leak and the nest site stops being habitable.
