Seven things. If a company can't give you all seven, they're selling a visit rather than an outcome.
Not the category. Species decides the product, the placement, the interval, and frequently whether treatment is warranted at all. Two insects that look near-identical to a non-specialist can need entirely different approaches.
For anything breeding indoors the interval is set by the egg hatch, not by a monthly schedule. "We'll come back in four weeks" against a pest with a shorter hatch cycle is a diary answer, not a biological one.
Which days activity increases. Which days it drops. Which week it looks like a relapse and isn't. This single piece of information prevents more abandoned treatments than anything else.
Preparation, and specifically what each item achieves rather than just what to do. Laundering is population reduction. Decluttering removes harbourage. Clearing access decides whether the treatment reaches the harbourage at all.
Don't clean the placements. Don't apply your own products. Don't move rooms. Don't move belongings between rooms.

The information most often withheld, set out plainly.
Days one to three: activity increases, because bait recruits them out of harbourage. Days three to ten: sharp decline. Days ten to twenty-one: the rebound, as carried egg cases hatch into a property that looks treated. The second visit is timed for exactly that emergence. Week three is not a failure, and reaching for a spray at that point is what ends the job.
Activity in the first days after chemical treatment as harbourage is disturbed. Then a partial return as eggs hatch, with the second treatment timed for it. Bites lag and vary, so progress is judged by interceptors and inspection rather than skin. Heat can achieve elimination in one session — but leaves no residual protection afterward.
Noticeable reduction within days if the bait matches what the colony is currently taking. More ants at the placement in the first day or two is the treatment working. And colonies switch between sugar and protein preference on their own schedule, so a placement that stops being worked needs the formulation changed rather than being written off.
Mice frequently produce results the first night. Rats avoid new objects for days — a trap catching nothing for a week hasn't failed, it hasn't been accepted, and moving it resets the clock.
Exclusion runs over days because the animal leaves on its own schedule, and during breeding periods it takes considerably longer.
Barrier treatments last weeks, not months, and rain shortens them while simultaneously refilling every container. The wave arrives about a week after heavy rain, predictably.
A barrier acts quickly on termites contacting the structure. A bait system eliminates a colony over months — slow is the mechanism, not a fault.
Which one you're buying should be stated explicitly.
Incidental invaders from outside that aren't breeding indoors. Occasional ants on one trail, spiders, cluster flies, an outdoor cockroach species, a stray wasp, one mouse in a well-sealed house. One visit works because there's no hidden reproductive population.
Anything breeding indoors where eggs survive treatment. German cockroaches, bed bugs, fleas, pharaoh ants. The follow-up is the mechanism, not the upsell — typically two to four visits at species-set intervals.
Rodents, wildlife, and anything entering repeatedly. Finding every entry and closing it with gnaw-resistant material. The half most often dropped from a quote.
Properties with genuine recurring external pressure — food premises, multi-unit buildings, sites next to woodland or water, and anywhere compliance requires documented management. Sold to properties that don't need it more often than to those that do.
Not chores. Each item does specific work.
The list that prevents most abandoned treatments.
Bait and residual work by staying put. Wiping cabinet corners and baseboards removes the part still working — the most common reason a technically good treatment underperforms.
Repellent sprays scatter populations into unmapped harbourage and contaminate the bait so insects avoid it.
Product goes where cockroaches and bed bugs don't live, the population gets pushed deeper into voids and into neighbouring units, and every subsequent treatment gets longer.
They follow the carbon dioxide of a sleeping host, so relocating spreads the infestation through the property.

And don't judge it at the rebound. That's the one moment when the correct action is to do nothing and wait for the scheduled visit.
The section that outlasts every treatment, and mostly costs nothing.
Moisture explains more pest calls than any other single condition. Leaking traps and taps, condensation on pipes, damp sink bases, crawlspace moisture, blocked gutters discharging at the foundation, and chronically wet timber. Carpenter ants, termites, silverfish, drain flies, and Oriental cockroaches are all water readings before they're insect problems.
Food. Grease film behind appliances, crumbs in cabinet corners, pet food left out, bin residue, unrinsed recycling, fallen fruit, and birdseed.
Harbourage. Stored cardboard, clutter, firewood against the building, dense ground cover at the foundation, and anything that hasn't been moved in years.
