The most useful number in wasp work isn't the size of the nest. It's the distance between the nest and the nearest place a person routinely stands.
Everything else follows from that. A yellowjacket colony of several thousand in a hedge at the far end of a large garden is, in practical terms, less dangerous to your household than a modest paper wasp nest above the back door — because the first one you never approach and the second one you walk under six times a day.
Defensive behaviour is distance-based. Every species has a radius within which it responds to an intruder, and that radius varies enormously — a few feet for paper wasps, considerably more for yellowjackets and hornets, and more again once a ground nest is triggered by vibration rather than by proximity. Outside the radius, a colony is essentially inert. Inside it, you're an intruder whether you meant to be or not.
Which turns the assessment into something concrete rather than a judgement call. Identify the species, establish its practical defensive radius, and see what falls inside it. A path, a door, a play area, a mower route, a washing line, a gas meter somebody has to read.
If nothing does, you frequently have a nest rather than a problem. If something does, the distance tells you how urgent it is.

You can do this from a safe distance, and it's the assessment that matters.
An open comb — a single exposed layer of cells on a short stalk — is paper wasps, with a short radius. A grey enclosed football is bald-faced hornets, with a longer one. A stream of insects into a single hole with no visible nest is almost certainly yellowjackets, and if that hole is in the ground the trigger is vibration rather than distance.
Not the nearest point you could reach — the nearest point somebody actually stands, walks, mows, plays, or works.
Doors and thresholds. Paths and steps. The bin store. The washing line. The play equipment. The mower route. The utility meter. The garden tap. Anywhere a delivery driver or a meter reader has to go, whether or not you go there yourself.
A nest twenty feet from a door but directly above the path to it is functionally at the door, because you pass within a few feet every time.
A nest well above head height on a wall is a different proposition from one at chest level on a fence post, even at the same horizontal distance.
Their trigger isn't proximity — it's vibration, which means a mower, a wheelbarrow, or footfall can set one off from further away than you'd expect, and the radius should be drawn generously.
Frequently no action warranted, particularly late in the season when the colony will die out anyway. We'll tell you that — and where it's worth doing, we'll seal the location after the season so next year's queen picks somewhere else.
Urgent regardless of species, season, or colony size. This is the most common genuine emergency in wasp work, and it's not about how many insects there are.
Urgent, and the radius should be drawn generously because children don't take predictable paths.
Particularly urgent for ground nests, because the trigger is vibration and the person on the mower has no warning.
A meter, a bin store, a delivery route. Urgent on any commercial or shared property, and it's a liability question as well as a safety one.
Anyone on the property with a sting allergy. Then the radius is the whole property, and any nest is urgent regardless of location or species.
Slender, long-legged, legs dangling in flight. Nest is an open exposed comb under eaves, soffits, deck rails, porch ceilings, and inside grills and unused equipment. Colonies stay small. They defend at close range and largely ignore activity beyond it. A nest under a high eave away from a door is frequently a non-event.
Stockier, brightly banded, legs held tight in flight. Nest enclosed and usually hidden — in the ground in an old rodent burrow, in wall voids, soffits, under decks, in compost. Colonies reach hundreds to thousands. A substantially longer radius, they sting repeatedly, and ground nests respond to vibration — which is why this species accounts for most stinging incidents.
Black with white markings, building the classic grey enclosed football on branches, eaves, and shrubs. Known for reacting at greater distance than paper wasps, and colonies get large by late summer.
Notably large, brown and yellow, unusually active at night and attracted to lights. Nesting in hollow trees, wall voids, attics, and outbuildings. Their attraction to lights effectively extends the radius after dark, into places the nest isn't.
Slender with a thread-like waist, building small tubular mud nests in sheltered corners. Solitary and essentially non-defensive. Almost never need treatment, and they're useful spider predators.
Fuzzy, golden-brown, in a swarm cluster or an established colony. A swarm usually moves on within a day or two; an established colony is a live removal for a beekeeper.
Large, round, very fuzzy, small colonies in ground cavities and compost. Docile, important pollinators, and they die out naturally at season's end. Removal only where there's genuine conflict.
Large, shiny black hairless abdomen, drilling round holes into fascia and rails. A structural problem rather than a stinging one — the males that hover aggressively cannot sting at all.
The nest shape, exactly where, how high, how much activity, what's within a few feet of it, whether anyone's been stung, and whether there's a known allergy.
We're generally happy to say what people can handle themselves. This is where we're least willing to.
The failure mode is being stung repeatedly by a defensive colony, on a ladder, in the dark.
And require you to stand within it — which means standing inside the radius by definition. Manageable for a small exposed paper wasp nest at arm's length. Not for a yellowjacket ground nest.
A can of spray into an entrance disturbs hundreds without killing them, and you're standing at the entrance when they emerge.
Spraying or sealing a wall void entrance without properly treating the colony drives insects inward, through the cavity and into living space.
The single most consequential mistake in this work.
And a significant share of stinging insect injuries involve a ladder rather than a sting. Multiple stings are a medical concern independent of allergy.
If anyone has a known allergy, don't approach the nest at all — not even to photograph it. Send someone else, or use a zoom from a window.
Late in the season, most wasp complaints aren't nest complaints — and the radius concept doesn't apply, because the insects aren't defending anything.
As colonies mature, food priorities shift toward sugars. Which is why pressure around bins, drinks, fallen fruit, and outdoor eating peaks in late summer. The nest may not be on your property at all, and treating your garden won't change it.
The attractants: uncovered bins, sticky residue, unrinsed recycling, fallen fruit, and open food and drink outdoors.
Open cans in particular. A wasp inside a can is the classic route to a sting in the mouth or throat, which genuinely needs emergency attention regardless of allergy status.
Practical measures: keep bins lidded and clean, rinse recycling, clear fallen fruit, cover food and drinks, use covered cups rather than open cans, and site bins away from seating.
Wasp traps have a limited role and a real downside. They can reduce foraging pressure in a defined area, but sited badly they draw wasps toward the space you're protecting — and they're indiscriminate. If used, they belong at the perimeter.
And it's worth remembering what the colony did all summer. For most of the season these are predators hunting caterpillars, flies, and other insects continuously to feed larvae.
Practical rather than medical, and not a substitute for advice from a doctor.
If a nest is disturbed, walk away in a straight line and get indoors or into a vehicle — you're trying to leave the radius, and that means distance rather than stillness. Don't flail. Don't jump into water — they'll wait.
A normal local reaction — pain, swelling, redness at the site — is common and manageable with cold compresses.
A large local reaction over a broader area can occur without being an allergic emergency, but mention it to a doctor.
Emergency medical attention immediately for: difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, hives spreading away from the site, dizziness, or collapse.
Stings inside the mouth or throat need attention regardless of allergy status.
Multiple stings warrant medical assessment independent of allergy.
If anyone carries an adrenaline auto-injector, tell us before we start and make sure it's accessible and in date.
Colonies are annual — workers die with the cold and the nest is never reused. But the locations that suited one queen suit the next, which means the useful prevention work is denying the sites closest to where you walk.

Spring proofing — sealing, screening, and inspection prioritised by proximity to entrances and play areas — costs a fraction of reactive removals.
